"We just don't have time to incorporate poetry." - This is unacceptable as poetry can lead you into teaching so much more about writing. 

Poetry can be a narrative, an ode, a sonnet, a haiku, a free verse, an epic.... and the list could go on forever.

Standards? NO WORRIES- you can teach lessons on history, or similes, or onomatopoeia, or stories, or details, or..... and the list could go on forever. 

So what's your excuse??
